What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Set overall materiality for Brightwater Supply Co. from a benchmark, derive performance materiality and the trivial threshold, and test the misstatements found.
- Build an expectation for each expense account, measure the variance and flag the accounts the audit team has to investigate.
- Size a monetary unit sample for Kestrel's receivables, set the interval and pick the customers to confirm with MATCH on cumulative amounts.
- Match ten purchase lines of Brightwater's payables, flag quantity and price exceptions and size the amount over-billed.
- Scan March's 16 vendor payments for possible duplicates and round amounts, then size the money at risk.
- Run a first-digit test on 60 vendor invoices, compare it with Benford's law and measure how far the data deviate.
- Screen Brightwater's year-end journal entries for weekend postings, after-hours postings and unusual users, then add up the high-risk entries.
- Compute Brightwater's FY2026 DSO and gross margin, compare the growth of receivables with revenue and decide whether the trend is a red flag.
About this course
Modern audits test whole populations, not just a handful of documents. This course shows you how to run those tests yourself. You set overall, performance and clearly trivial materiality, then build expectations for analytical procedures and investigate differences. Monetary unit sampling labs calculate sample size and interval and select items. You perform a three-way match of order, receipt and invoice, hunt for duplicate payments and suspicious round amounts, and apply Benford's law to first digits. Journal entry testing filters postings made at weekends, after hours or by unusual users, and a final lab looks for ratio red flags such as a jump in DSO or a margin swing. For auditors, audit students and internal control teams.
