What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn Lakeside Community Bank's average balances and rates into interest income, interest expense, the net interest margin and the spread.
  • Build the minimum rate Lakeside must charge on a $2.5 million business loan and size the gap to the rate the client asks for.
  • Calculate Lakeside's repricing gaps, the one-year cumulative gap and how much net interest income changes if all rates rise by 2 points.
  • Compare compounding frequencies, grow a 3-year deposit, check a rival offer and find the nominal rate behind an advertised APY.
  • Weight Lakeside's assets by risk, calculate its capital ratio and find how much new lending the capital surplus could carry.
  • Price Ridgeway Mutual's homeowners cover by segment: expected loss per policy, gross premium with loadings, and the portfolio totals.
  • Turn Ridgeway Mutual's written premium and claims into earned premium, the loss ratio, the expense ratio and the combined ratio.
  • Project Ridgeway Mutual's general-liability claims to ultimate with the chain-ladder method and estimate the IBNR reserve.

About this course

Banks and insurers look different on the surface, but both run on a few core calculations. This course covers them in one place. On the banking side you read a balance sheet and compute net interest margin, build a loan rate from funding cost, risk and overhead, and test an interest rate gap against a rate shock. You compare deposit compounding and APY and calculate risk-weighted assets and a capital ratio. On the insurance side you price premiums from claim frequency and severity plus loadings, analyse loss, expense and combined ratios, and estimate claims reserves including IBNR with the chain ladder method. A practical overview for finance students, junior analysts and anyone starting out in financial services.
