What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn Stonebrook Builders' eight winning bids into estimated total cost, estimated gross profit and gross margin, job by job and for the whole backlog.
- Measure the progress of all eight jobs at 31 Dec 2026 with cost-to-cost, find the cost still to come and count the jobs past the halfway mark.
- Calculate how much revenue each job has earned to date, how much of it belongs to 2026 and the gross profit recognised so far.
- Follow one school job through four quarters and watch it swing between underbilled and overbilled.
- Complete Stonebrook's work-in-progress schedule at 31 Dec 2026, split overbillings from underbillings, total them and book the WIP adjustment.
- Add approved change orders to each contract, compare the bid margin with today's margin and measure the fade in percentage points and dollars.
- Re-estimate two jobs, spot the one that has turned into a loss, provide for the remaining loss and see how much hits the first quarter of 2027.
- Calculate the retainage Stonebrook is owed and owes, the backlog still to be earned, and chart bid vs current margins by job.
About this course
Contractors bill on one schedule and earn revenue on another, and the gap between them shows up on the balance sheet. This course teaches you to measure it. You start with contract value, estimated total cost and gross profit, then calculate percent complete with the cost-to-cost method. Earned revenue to date and for the year follow. Comparing billings with earned revenue gives overbillings and underbillings, and you assemble a WIP schedule for eight jobs with the year-end adjustment. Further labs handle change orders and revised estimates that cause margin fade, recognise the full expected loss on a loss contract and summarise retainage and backlog with a margin-fade chart. For construction accountants, controllers and CPAs serving contractors.
