What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn camera timecodes into frame numbers, measure edit events from their in and out points, write a duration back as HH:MM:SS:FF with INT, MOD and TEXT, and total the length of a rough cut.
- Convert camera bitrates in megabits per second into megabytes per minute and gigabytes per hour, size one camera's footage for a shoot day and work out how many memory cards Ines must prepare.
- Estimate how long each evening's offload takes at the card reader's speed, when it finishes, how many backup drives the shoot needs for three copies and how much space is left on each.
- Work out the largest crop of the UHD master for vertical, square, portrait and cinema frames, round it to even pixel counts, measure how much of the picture each crop keeps and set the title-safe margin for the vertical cut.
- Convert shutter angles into shutter speeds, find the playback speed of each high-frame-rate shot on a 25 fps timeline, calculate how long a moment lasts on screen and the frame rate a director's slow-motion request needs.
- Count the characters of each subtitle with LEN, measure its duration, calculate the reading speed in characters per second and flag every subtitle that breaks the house rules with one IFS formula.
- Work out the highest video bitrate that keeps each deliverable under its file-size cap, estimate export times from the machine's speed factor, size the proxy files and total the export time for the whole delivery.
- Count delivered items with COUNTIFS, find the open deliverables due in the next seven days, compare storage used with the plan and chart planned against used storage by area.
About this course
Running out of cards on set or missing a delivery spec are expensive mistakes that a few calculations can prevent. This course covers them. You convert between timecode, frame numbers and durations at different frame rates, then turn bitrate into megabytes per minute, gigabytes per hour and cards per shoot day. An offload lab plans copy times and drives for every backup. You calculate crop sizes and safe margins across aspect ratios, relate shutter angle to shutter speed and slow motion to screen time, and check subtitle reading speed. Export labs find the maximum bitrate for a size limit, and a dashboard tracks deadlines and storage. For editors, camera operators and video students.
