What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Total Fernhill Furniture's emission sources by scope with SUMIFS, see how much of the footprint sits in the value chain and classify two new sources.
- Turn Fernhill's fuel and electricity data into tonnes of CO2e and report Scope 2 both location-based and market-based.
- Estimate the emissions of Fernhill's business trips and staff commuting, two Scope 3 categories every company can measure.
- Calculate three intensity metrics for Fernhill over three years and compare the fall in intensity with the fall in absolute emissions.
- Set Fernhill's 2030 target from its 2023 baseline, draw the straight-line path to it and check whether the company is on track.
- Rank seven of Fernhill's reduction options by cost per tonne, sort them with SMALL and INDEX/MATCH and chart a simple marginal abatement cost curve.
- Stress-test Fernhill's EBIT under four carbon price scenarios, including costs suppliers pass on, and find the price that would wipe out its profit.
- Turn Fernhill's raw environmental and people data into four ratio KPIs for two years and chart them side by side.
About this course
Carbon reporting begins with a clean inventory, and this course builds one with you. You classify emission sources into scope 1, 2 and 3, multiply fuel and electricity activity data by emission factors, and estimate business travel and employee commuting. Totals are expressed as intensities per revenue, per employee and per unit produced. You set a baseline year and a linear reduction target, then rank abatement options on a marginal abatement cost curve to see which cut emissions most cheaply. A carbon price is applied to show its impact on profit, and a KPI dashboard brings energy, waste and diversity indicators together. Written for sustainability and finance staff, consultants, SME owners and students; factors are illustrative.
