What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn raw data for a 20-stock universe into three classic factor measures and rank the stocks by value.
- Standardise value, momentum and quality so they can be added up, combine them 40/30/30 and find the top-ranked stock.
- Sort the universe into five portfolios of four stocks by composite score, measure each quintile's next-month return and chart the pattern.
- Build the monthly return of a long-short factor portfolio, compound it and test whether the average is more than noise.
- Regress a value portfolio's excess returns on the market's and read off beta, alpha and R².
- Regress a fund's excess returns on four factor returns at once and read its market beta, value tilt, alpha and R² from LINEST.
- Measure how much of a monthly-rebalanced factor portfolio is traded and how much of the backtest premium trading costs eat.
- Summarise a 36-month factor backtest with the four numbers every fact sheet shows and chart the growth of $1 against the benchmark.
About this course
Smart beta products are built on factor scores, and here you construct them from raw stock data. You score stocks on price-to-book value, 12-minus-1-month momentum and ROE quality, standardise the scores and blend them into a weighted multi-factor composite. Stocks are ranked into quintile portfolios, and the long-short return of the top minus the bottom quintile is tested with a hit rate and t-statistic. You estimate CAPM beta and alpha, run a multi-factor regression in the style of Fama and French, measure rebalancing turnover and trading-cost drag, and summarise a backtest with CAGR, volatility, Sharpe ratio and maximum drawdown. For finance students, quant-curious investors and analysts; educational, not investment advice.
