What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Work out Maya's share of the premium for three workplace plans per month, per year and per paycheck.
  • Split three claims of different sizes between Maya and Plan B, step by step: deductible, coinsurance, out-of-pocket maximum.
  • Run Maya's claims for a whole year through Plan B and track how the deductible fills up, coinsurance starts, and the out-of-pocket maximum stops her costs.
  • Compare Maya's three plans on total yearly cost (premiums + out-of-pocket) in a low, a medium and a high usage year, and see how much a wrong choice can cost.
  • Chart total cost against medical spending for Plan A and Plan C and find the spending level where the two plans cost the same.
  • Add a tax-advantaged health savings account to Plan C: the tax saving, the net cost of the plan this year, and how the unspent money grows.
  • Work out what Maya's family of four pays when one person has big claims, first with an embedded deductible, then with an aggregate one.
  • Weight Maya's low, medium and high usage scenarios by their probability, find each plan's expected yearly cost, pick the plan and chart the result.

About this course

Plan brochures list many numbers, but the question is simple: what will you pay in a year? You start with premiums, then follow a single claim through deductible, coinsurance and out-of-pocket cap. A full year of claims tracks how the deductible fills and when the maximum is reached. Plans are compared in low, medium and high usage years, and you find the usage level at which a low-deductible plan beats a high-deductible one. Contributions to a tax-advantaged health savings account are added, family coverage compares embedded and aggregate deductibles, and the last lab ranks plans by expected annual cost using probabilities. For employees choosing benefits, HR staff and students. Illustrative plans; not insurance or tax advice.
