Sheet Metal Fabrication Quoting: Flat Blanks & Bend Allowance, Nesting & Material Utilisation, Laser Cut Time, Press Brake Time & Batch Pricing
Quote sheet metal parts the way a job shop does: flat blank sizes from bend allowances, parts nested on sheets and the material used, laser cutting time from perimeter and pierce points, press brake setup and bend time, coating and margin, and the batch size where the price per part flattens out, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Look up a fictional K-factor from each bracket's radius-to-thickness ratio, calculate the bend allowance with RADIANS and add it to the straight legs to get the flat blank length the laser has to cut.
- Work from drawings that dimension the outside of each flange: you calculate the outside setback with TAN, the bend deduction per bend and the flat length of channels and brackets, and prove that both methods give the same blank.
- Calculate each blank's gross and net area, subtract the punched or cut holes with PI, turn the net area into a weight with a density lookup and price the material per part on the whole blank.
- Fit rectangular blanks onto a standard sheet in rows and columns, try the rotated layout, keep the better one, round the number of sheets up and measure how much of the bought metal ends up in parts.
- Measure the cut length of each part from its outline and holes, add the pierce time for every contour, convert it into minutes with fictional speeds by thickness and price the time at the machine's hourly rate.
- Build each batch's press brake time from setups and bends, see how a fixed setup is spread over small and large batches and find the batch size at which the setup share falls to a target.
- Price the work after cutting and bending: coating by the square metre with a minimum batch charge, pressed-in inserts with their labour, and packaging by the box, and add the extras per part.
- Combine the per-part costs from labs 3–7 with the fixed batch costs, add overhead and margin, price one bracket at 1, 10, 100 and 1,000 parts and chart how the price per part flattens as the batch grows.
About this course
Quote too low and the job loses money; quote too high and the customer goes elsewhere. This course builds sheet metal quotes from the part outwards, using fictional parts and machine rates. You calculate flat blank lengths from bend allowances and K-factors, and from outside flange dimensions with bend deductions. Part area and weight give material cost, and nesting labs fit parts onto sheets to find sheets needed and material utilisation. Laser time comes from cut length and pierce points, press brake time from setups and bends per part. You add coating area, inserts and packaging, then build the quote with cost, margin and price per part for several batch sizes, seeing where the price flattens out. For estimators, fabricators, production engineers and apprentices.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
