Landed Cost & Import Duties: Incoterms, Tariffs, VAT & True Unit Cost
Compare supplier quotes across Incoterms, build the customs value on a CIF or FOB basis, calculate ad valorem, specific and compound duty from an HS lookup, import VAT on the duty-inclusive value, allocate freight across SKUs, convert currencies with a buffer, find the true landed cost per unit and test tariff scenarios, all with a fictional importer in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell. Illustrative rates, not a tariff schedule; not legal or tax advice.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Add the costs Larkfield still pays to four supplier quotes on different Incoterms, compare the delivered costs and find the cheapest supplier.
- Build the customs value of five shipments, then calculate the duty on a CIF basis and on an FOB basis and see the difference.
- Look up the duty rates of six invoice lines by HS code, calculate ad valorem, specific and compound duty, and work out the shipment's effective duty rate.
- Calculate the import VAT on five shipments, the cash Larkfield must pay at the border and what it costs to finance that VAT until it is reclaimed.
- Split one container's freight across six SKUs by weight, by value and by volume, and chart how much the method changes each SKU's share.
- Convert five foreign-currency purchase orders to USD, add a budget buffer, calculate what was actually paid with a deposit and a balance, and flag the orders where the buffer was not enough.
- Build the landed cost per unit for six SKUs, compare the margin on FOB cost with the true margin on landed cost, find the weakest SKU and chart the gap.
- Compare the landed cost of one product from three origins today and under a selectable tariff scenario, and find which origin wins.
About this course
A supplier's price is only the starting point; by the time goods reach your warehouse, the unit cost can look very different. This course teaches importers to calculate it properly. You compare EXW, FOB, CIF and DDP quotes from the buyer's side and build the customs value on a CIF or FOB basis. Duties are calculated as ad valorem, specific or compound rates from a tariff lookup, and import VAT or GST is applied to the duty-inclusive value along with the cash it ties up. You allocate freight and insurance across SKUs by weight, value or volume, add currency buffers and reveal the margin hidden by FOB pricing. A final lab tests tariff changes and alternative sourcing countries. Illustrative rates only.
