Court Deadlines & Limitation Periods: Business-Day Counting, Holidays & Docket Calendars

Compute filing deadlines and limitation dates the way docketing teams do: calendar vs court days, holiday tables, next-court-day roll-forward, extra days for postal service, EDATE limitation periods, tolling, a traffic-light docket and a month calendar, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Count filing deadlines in calendar days and in court days with WORKDAY and a court-holiday table, pick the right method per matter with IF, and handle a tribunal that also sits on Saturdays with WORKDAY.INTL.
  • Find the weekday of each raw deadline, test whether the court is closed that day, roll closed-day deadlines forward to the next court day with the WORKDAY(date − 1, 1) trick and highlight every deadline that moved.
  • Look up the extra days for each service method in a rules table, build raw and final deadlines that add those days and roll forward from closed days, and work backwards to the latest day a reply can still be posted.
  • Start each limitation clock on the later of incident and discovery, add the period for the claim type in years with EDATE, cap it with a long-stop counted from the incident and show how many days are left.
  • Count the days of each pause, total the paused days per claim with SUMPRODUCT, push the expiry back by that total and clip a pause that started before the clock was running.
  • Turn a docket into days left from the as-of date, give every entry a Done / Overdue / Red / Amber / Green status, count the open deadlines due in the next 14 days and colour the urgent rows.
  • Build a personal docket for the lawyer selected in J1: the open deadlines in the next 30 days, the next open deadline, a list of the five earliest open deadlines with SMALL and FILTER, and the matter behind each date.
  • Build a six-week Monday-to-Sunday calendar grid from one date, highlight every day that carries a deadline with a conditional formatting rule and count the deadlines of the month with COUNTIFS and EOMONTH.

About this course

A missed deadline is one of the costliest mistakes in legal practice, and most of them come down to counting. This course shows how to build deadline calculations you can check. You distinguish calendar days from court days with WORKDAY and a holiday table and apply the next-court-day rule when a date falls on a weekend or holiday. Lookup rules add extra days by service method and give the latest posting date. Limitation periods are calculated in months and years with EDATE, including a discovery rule, a long-stop and tolling periods. You then build a docket with days left and traffic-light status, a personal view per lawyer and a monthly calendar. Illustrative rules only, not legal advice.
