What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a pieces list into volumetric kilos per piece, add up actual and volumetric weight for the whole shipment and find the chargeable weight the airline bills, rounded up to the next half kilo.
  • Look up the rate per kilo for each shipment's weight break, apply the minimum charge, price the same shipment at the next break and bill whichever is lower.
  • Work out cubic metres and tonnes for six consolidated sea bookings, bill each on weight-or-measure with a minimum, and label which bookings are weight-bound.
  • Price the same light cargo as shared LCL and as full containers for seven volumes, pick the cheaper mode and find the break-even volume.
  • Build the full buy cost of an air shipment line by line: base freight, a fuel percentage, per-kilo surcharges with minimums and fixed fees, and see how far the all-in rate per kilo lies above the base rate.
  • Convert buy costs from two fictional currencies into the quote currency, add them up, set a sell price that earns the target margin, round it for the customer and check the margin you really earn.
  • Work out when cargo reaches the hub, when the next scheduled departure leaves, the door delivery date for air, sea and sea-air, and how many days each option has to spare.
  • Price one shipment three ways with all-in rates, add the margin, compare cost, price and transit days in a chart and recommend the cheapest option that meets the customer's deadline.

About this course

Two shipments of the same weight can cost very different amounts, because freight is priced on space as well as mass. This course teaches you to build quotes that account for both. You compare actual and volumetric weight to find the chargeable weight, apply air rates by weight break and check whether a higher break is cheaper. For consolidated sea freight you price by cubic metres or tonnes, whichever is greater, and find the point at which a full container pays off. Surcharges and fees turn a base rate into a full buy cost, and currencies, margin and mark-up give the sell price. Transit times and sailing days lead to delivery dates, and air, sea and sea-air options are compared. For freight forwarders, logistics coordinators and importers.
