What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert the link speeds of Pinemoor Architects' offices from megabits per second into megabytes per second, gigabytes per hour and gibibytes per hour, and convert a file size from GiB to GB.
- Calculate how long five of Pinemoor's transfers take, how much fits in the 8-hour night window, and whether shipping disks beats the network for an 18,000 GiB archive.
- Calculate the speed of light in fibre, the one-way propagation delay and the minimum RTT for five routes from Pinemoor's Zurich office, and how much of the measured RTT is pure physics.
- Calculate the bandwidth-delay product of six Pinemoor paths, the throughput cap a 64 KB TCP window sets on each, the share of the link one connection can use, and what a scaled 4 MiB window achieves to Sydney.
- Estimate how much a little packet loss caps one TCP flow on six Pinemoor paths, how long the 48 GiB project copy then takes and how low the loss must be for 100 Mbps to New York.
- Work out how many payload bytes each packet carries in five scenarios (IPv4, IPv6, timestamps, VPN, jumbo frames), the efficiency on the wire, the goodput on a 1 Gbps link and the frame rate at line speed.
- Calculate the utilisation of the 50 Mbps line at Pinemoor's Lugano site office through the day, the average queueing delay and queue length it causes, and the highest traffic that keeps the queueing delay under 1 ms.
- Find the billable 95th percentile of Pinemoor's internet traffic from 5-minute samples, calculate the burstable bill, choose the port size for next year and chart the 95th-percentile trend.
About this course
A fast link does not guarantee a fast transfer, and this course explains why with numbers. You start by separating bits from bytes and decimal from binary units, then estimate transfer times for files and backups, including the point at which shipping a disk beats the network. Propagation delay and round-trip time are derived from distance and the speed of light in fibre. The bandwidth-delay product shows when the TCP window limits throughput, and a simplified Mathis formula links packet loss to speed. You account for header overhead, MTU and jumbo frames to find goodput, model link utilisation and queueing delay and size a WAN link under 95th-percentile billing. For network engineers, sysadmins and IT students; includes graded labs.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
