What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Sort a year of gifts by donor restriction, release restricted money that was spent on its purpose and roll net assets forward for each class.
- Turn a ledger extract into a statement of activities with a Without, a With and a Total column, using one SUMIFS copied across the grid.
- Split each expense into program, admin and fundraising, total the functions and test the program-expense ratio against a benchmark.
- Calculate an indirect cost rate, allocate the shared cost pool to four programs and find out how much a capped grant leaves unfunded.
- Build a 12-month grant budget from salaries, FTE and months, add fringe and other direct costs, apply the funder's indirect cap and work out the cost share.
- Seven months into a 12-month grant, you compare spending with the budget, measure the monthly burn and flag the lines that will run out before the grant ends.
- Compare five fundraising channels by cost per dollar raised, find the cheapest one with a formula and measure donor retention.
- Work out how many months of expenses the free cash covers, compare it with the board's target and test how long the cash lasts if a large grant payment is late.
About this course
Nonprofit finance has its own vocabulary: restricted funds, functional expenses, indirect rates and runway. This course turns each into a practical calculation. You separate restricted and unrestricted funds and report net assets by restriction, then prepare a statement of activities by fund with SUMIFS. Functional expense analysis gives the program-expense ratio, and you allocate indirect costs to calculate an indirect cost rate. You build a grant budget from personnel, fringe, direct and indirect lines and track it against actual spending and burn rate. Fundraising efficiency is measured by cost per dollar raised and donor retention, and the final lab calculates cash runway, operating reserves and months of reserve. For nonprofit managers, finance staff and board members.
