Tennis Match Statistics: Serve & Return Points, Break Points, Point-Win Probabilities, Game & Set Win Chances and Match Reports

Read a tennis match through its numbers. You will build first- and second-serve statistics from a point-by-point log, compare serve and return points won, analyse break points and pressure points, turn point-win chances into game, tie-break and set win probabilities and write a match report for your own club matches, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Read a fictional point-by-point log, build a game key for every point, mark whether the server won it and work out one player's share of the points and the average rally length of the points she won.
  • Turn 24 logged service points into the four classic serve numbers for both players: first serve in %, points won on the first serve, points won on the second serve and double faults.
  • Measure Nell's return game over six fictional club matches: return points won, all points won, the season's break rate and the dominance ratio that weighs return against serve.
  • Work out break points saved and converted per match and for the season, combine them into a pressure-points share and compare it with the share of all points won.
  • Turn a server's point-win chance p into the chance of holding serve: winning before deuce, reaching deuce, winning from deuce and the total – and see how a small edge per point grows per game.
  • Look up a set win chance for every player from a fictional table, turn it into a best-of-three match chance, find the point share a target needs and measure how much a small point edge grows over a match.
  • Sort 20 points into rally-length bands with a lookup, count the points per band, find where Nell wins most and compare her winners with her own unforced errors.
  • Finish Nell's season report: points won % per match, the pooled season share, the trend of her first-serve percentage and a line chart for the club noticeboard.

About this course

A tennis scoreline hides most of the story; the point-by-point record tells it. In this course you work with a fictional match log and turn it into the statistics coaches and analysts use. One row per point gives game keys and shares, from which you calculate first serves in, points won behind first and second serves and double faults. Return points and breaks show the serve-return balance, and break points saved, converted and deuce games capture pressure. You then calculate the chance of holding serve from a point-win probability and see how small point edges grow into large set and match advantages. Rally-length bands, winners against errors and a season tracker with trends complete the course. For players, coaches and tennis fans.
