Beekeeping by the Numbers: Colonies, Mite Counts, Feeding, Splits & Honey Harvest

Run a fictional hobby apiary with numbers: equipment cost per hive, brood cycles and build-up, mite counts per 100 bees (counting only), split calendars, syrup and winter stores, honey harvest and jars, prices and pollination fees and a season dashboard, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Price every part of one hive, total the cost per hive with SUMPRODUCT, turn it into an order list for six hives and let INT tell you how many complete hives the budget really buys.
  • Add up the development stages of workers, queens and drones, date their emergence, and turn a queen's daily laying into the bees that hatch three weeks later, then chart the spring build-up.
  • Turn raw mite counts into mites per 100 bees, sort each colony into the club's fictional monitoring bands with IFS, count the High colonies and find the colony whose count rose most.
  • Build a split calendar from one start date with date arithmetic, show each step's weekday with TEXT, and work out how many new colonies each strong colony can give under the club's fictional rule.
  • Turn syrup ratios into sugar per litre, estimate each colony's stores from its hive weight, find the shortfall against a fictional winter target with MAX and convert it into kilos of sugar and litres of syrup.
  • Flag each super against a fictional moisture limit, estimate the extracted honey from frames, kilos per frame and yield, total only the supers that pass and work out how many jars to have ready with ROUNDUP.
  • Turn the year's costs into a honey cost per kg and a full cost per jar, compare the margin across three sales channels and work out the net income of a pollination contract with ROUNDUP trips.
  • Close Wren's season: a profit from the season log, the average harvest per colony at one site with AVERAGEIFS, a colour flag for the Watch-band mite counts and a chart of honey per colony.

About this course

Good beekeeping involves a surprising amount of counting and planning. This course turns those jobs into clear calculations. You list hives, boxes and frames and find the cost per hive, then use brood cycles to predict emergence dates and weekly hatch during build-up. Mite monitoring is handled as a counting exercise, with mites per hundred bees, bands and trends. A splits calendar runs from a single start day, and feeding labs mix syrup ratios and work out sugar needed to reach winter stores. At harvest you estimate frames, extraction yield, moisture and jars, then price honey and pollination services before a season dashboard brings it together. For hobby and sideline beekeepers and beekeeping students.
