API Usage, Rate Limits & Quotas: Token Buckets, Retries and Cost
Hands-on labs for engineers and product people who run or consume APIs: requests per second vs limits, a token bucket step by step, fixed vs sliding windows, exponential backoff with jitter, 429 rates and retry success, quotas per plan tier, batching and caching savings, and cost per customer with a margin chart, every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert a client's per-minute request log into requests per second, find the peak minute, count the minutes over the 600-per-minute limit and the excess requests.
- Simulate a token bucket with capacity 10 and a refill of 4 tokens per second for 12 seconds of traffic and measure how many requests it rejects.
- Run the same 12 requests through a fixed-window and a sliding-window limiter (5 per 60 s) and count what each one rejects.
- Build a six-retry schedule: exponential delays, a cap, full jitter from given random draws and the total time a client waits before giving up.
- Measure Routely's daily 429 rate, how many requests still failed after retries, the week's final success rate, and model what retries add in success and in load.
- Calculate the overage of four plan tiers, Quillstack's monthly overage revenue, the total monthly call volume and the peak requests per second it implies.
- Work out how many API calls Routely saves with a cache and with batch requests, and what that saves on the monthly bill.
- Calculate the cost to serve an average customer of each plan, the gross margin per tier, the break-even usage of the Starter plan, and chart the margins.
About this course
When an API gets busy, the rules for who may call it, how often and at what price decide whether it stays healthy. In this course you work with request logs and simulate those rules. You find peak requests per second and per minute and compare them with the limit, then simulate a token bucket with capacity and refill rate to see which calls pass. Fixed and sliding window counters are compared at the boundary burst, and a delay table builds exponential backoff with jitter. You measure 429 error rates and success after retries, plan quotas and overage per customer tier, estimate savings from batching and caching, and compute cost and gross margin per pricing tier. For backend developers, API product managers and SREs.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?

Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
