What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Work out the front-end gross on ten Fernhill Motors deals and compare the average gross per new and per used unit.
  • Measure how well the F&I office at Fernhill Motors sells finance and protection products: penetration per product, total F&I income, PVR and products per retail unit.
  • Combine front-end and F&I gross into total gross per unit for new and used, measure the unit mix and see how a shift in the mix changes next month's gross.
  • Age the 18 used cars on the Fernhill Motors lot, flag the ones past the 60-day rule for wholesale and measure the cash tied up in them and the days supply.
  • Calculate the floorplan interest on ten new cars Fernhill Motors sold this month, compare it with the manufacturer holdback and find the day count at which a car eats its holdback.
  • Appraise six trade-ins by working back from the expected retail price, measure the over-allowances the sales desk gave and the reconditioning load.
  • Turn the service department's hours and parts sales into gross profit and measure how much of Fernhill Motors' overhead the fixed operations cover.
  • Pull the month together into a Fernhill Motors P&L, find the number of retail units needed to break even and chart net profit against volume.

About this course

A car dealership earns its profit in several places at once, and few of them are the sticker price. In this course you analyse each one. You calculate front-end gross on new and used units, then finance and insurance income through penetration, products per unit and per-vehicle revenue. Combining both gives total gross per unit and the effect of the new and used mix. Used inventory labs measure ageing, days supply and turn, and floorplan labs add interest cost and holdback. You appraise a trade-in by working back from the retail price, measure service and parts gross with the absorption rate and build a dealership P&L with break-even units. For dealership staff, managers and automotive students.
