What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Apply the order of operations to two classic test traps, estimate a workshop order with rounded prices and measure how far the estimate is from the exact total.
  • Convert fractions to decimals, write fractions in simplest form with a given GCD helper column, add two fractions over a common denominator and take a fraction of an amount.
  • Solve the four percentage question types that appear in almost every entrance test: a percent of an amount, a percent change, a discount followed by a surcharge and the original price before a discount.
  • Solve a direct and an inverse proportion, split a mix by its ratio and combine two work rates – the four rule-of-three patterns behind most practical test questions.
  • Convert lengths, masses, areas, volumes and times with one lookup formula on a unit table, write minutes as hours and minutes and cut a rope given in metres into pieces given in centimetres.
  • Calculate a composite L-shaped floor, a triangular gable, a round tabletop and the volume of a cylindrical tank in litres – the shapes that appear again and again in trade test questions.
  • Turn four typical word problems into formulas: an order with a discount, an arrival time from distance and speed, the price of a mixture and the number of tile boxes for a floor with waste.
  • Score two timed mock tests, compare the scores of both sets, build a weak-topic report with the share of correct answers per topic and highlight the questions that took longer than the target time.

About this course

Many trade and apprenticeship applications include a maths section, and the questions tend to repeat the same core skills. This course trains them one by one. You start with order of operations, rounding and quick estimates, then convert fractions and decimals and find fractions of amounts. Percentages cover discounts, surcharges and working back to the original price. The rule of three handles direct and inverse proportion, mix ratios and work rates, while a unit table keeps length, area, volume, mass and time conversions straight. You calculate areas and volumes of rectangles, circles, cylinders and combined shapes and solve money, speed and mixture word problems. Two timed practice sets with a score sheet show which topics need more work. For school leavers and career changers.
