Cross-Tabs & Chi-Square: Analysing Categorical Data in Excel
Build cross-tabs from raw rows with COUNTIFS, read row and column percentages, compute expected counts, chi-square and Cramér's V by hand, and handle 2 × 2 tables, small samples and paired answers, in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn 40 raw survey rows into a plan × purpose cross-tab with one COUNTIFS formula, check that no row went missing, and add a mean per cell with AVERAGEIFS.
- Turn the full 600-rider cross-tab into row, column and total percentages, compare plans in percentage points, and chart the row percentages.
- Build the table of expected counts under independence (row total × column total ÷ grand total), measure how far each observed cell is from it with standardised residuals, and check the minimum expected count.
- Compute the chi-square statistic cell by cell, turn it into a p-value with CHISQ.DIST.RT, and confirm it with CHISQ.TEST.
- Turn chi-square into Cramér's V for two tables, then see that ten times more riders makes the p-value collapse while the effect size stays exactly the same.
- Read a 2 × 2 table of a reminder experiment, calculate the risk difference, the relative risk and the odds ratio, and put a 95% confidence interval around the odds ratio on the log scale.
- Check the expected-count rule on a sparse table, fix it by combining two categories, and calculate a one-sided Fisher exact p-value for a tiny 2 × 2 pilot with COMBIN.
- Test whether the same riders changed their answer after a campaign with McNemar's test (chi-square and exact binomial) and show the before/after shares in a 100% stacked column chart.
About this course
Survey answers, customer types and yes-or-no outcomes all produce categorical data, and the cross-tab is the main tool for analysing it. In this course you build cross-tabs from raw rows and choose between row, column and total percentages to answer the right question. You calculate expected counts under independence and run a chi-square test by hand and with a built-in function, then measure strength of association with Cramér's V. Two-by-two labs calculate risk difference, relative risk and odds ratio with a confidence interval. You handle small samples by combining categories or using Fisher's exact test, and analyse paired answers with McNemar's test. For researchers, analysts and students.
