Tourism Statistics by the Numbers: Arrivals vs Overnight Stays, Length of Stay, Bed & Room Occupancy, Seasonality Indices and Regional Reports

Read and build tourism statistics like a regional analyst. You will turn arrivals and nights into average length of stay, compute bed and room occupancy from capacity, build seasonality indices, compare regions and accommodation types year over year, measure tourism intensity and project next season, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Read a monthly tourism table the way an analyst does: total overnight stays, nights for one accommodation type and arrivals for one month with SUMIFS, and the share one type holds of all nights.
  • Build a summary by accommodation type with SUMIFS, compute the average length of stay for campsites and the pooled value for the whole district, and see why averaging the type ratios gives the wrong answer.
  • Turn nights and room-nights into bed-place and room occupancy, see how far the open-days basis lifts the rate for seasonal regions and compute the district rate the right way.
  • Compute a seasonal index for each month, measure how peaky the year is with the peak-to-trough ratio, count the peak-season months and highlight them with a formula rule.
  • Compare January–September with January–September, compute regional and district growth rates, and split the district's growth into regional contributions in percentage points and shares of the extra nights.
  • Scale nights by residents and by area, rank the regions by volume with RANK.EQ and find the region with the highest tourism intensity with INDEX/MATCH.
  • Fit a linear trend to seven years of district nights with FORECAST.LINEAR and SLOPE, turn it into a trend factor and project 2026 month by month from the 2025 seasonal pattern.
  • Complete a regional KPI table with average length of stay and yearly bed occupancy, build a top-3 list with LARGE and INDEX/MATCH and chart the nights by region for the annual report.

About this course

Tourism figures look straightforward until arrivals, nights, beds and rooms get mixed in one table. This course teaches you to keep them apart and turn them into clear indicators. Working with a fictional regional dataset, you compute average length of stay by accommodation type, then bed and room occupancy based on open days versus calendar days. You build a monthly seasonality index, find peak and low seasons and compare regions year over year, including each segment's contribution to growth. Tourism intensity per resident and per area, a simple linear trend projection for next season and a compact regional KPI report round it off. Each lab checks your cells. Great for destination analysts, hotel teams and statistics learners.
