What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Read 36 months of revenue: month-over-month, year-over-year, the annual totals and the compound annual growth rate.
- Forecast next week's web-shop orders three ways: a 4-week moving average, a weighted moving average and exponential smoothing.
- Measure how strong each calendar month is: average per month, overall average and the seasonal index.
- Remove the season from 2025 revenue to see the underlying level, then put the season back to forecast Q1 2026.
- Fit a straight-line trend to 36 months of deseasonalised revenue and extend it through 2026.
- Combine the linear trend with the seasonal indices into a monthly 2026 forecast and compare the year with 2025.
- Grade last year's 2025 forecast against the actuals: average error, percentage error, bias and the tracking signal.
- Build 2026 revenue from its drivers in three scenarios, weight them and compare the result with the trend × season forecast.
About this course
Before reaching for a black-box model, it helps to forecast a series by hand and understand each component. You describe a time series with month-on-month, year-on-year and compound growth, then smooth it with simple and weighted moving averages and exponential smoothing. A seasonal index is calculated for every month, used to deseasonalise the data and to put seasonality back in. A linear trend is fitted with TREND, FORECAST.LINEAR, SLOPE and INTERCEPT, then combined with seasonality into a twelve-month forecast. You measure accuracy with MAE, MAPE, bias and a tracking signal, and finally compare the statistical forecast with a driver-based scenario. For analysts, planners, finance teams and students.
