Machine Learning Forecasting: Lag Features, Train/Test Splits & Error Metrics
Forecast daily demand the way ML teams do: lag, rolling and calendar features, a leak-free split by date, naive and seasonal-naive baselines, MAE/RMSE/MAPE, a LINEST regression on lags, walk-forward validation and drop-one feature importance, in 8 graded labs.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn a daily demand series into a supervised-learning table with Lag 1, Lag 7 and a leakage-free rolling mean, then measure which lag carries more signal.
- Derive the weekday with WEEKDAY, build 0/1 dummy columns for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, flag holidays from a list and measure the Saturday uplift.
- Split six weeks of demand at a cut-off date, check the test share, compute training statistics without test data and prove there is no overlap.
- Forecast the two test weeks with the naive and the seasonal-naive rule and score them with MAE, RMSE and MAPE, the bar every ML model must clear.
- Fit demand = b + m₁·Lag 1 + m₇·Lag 7 on four training weeks with LINEST, pull each coefficient out with INDEX, read R² and forecast the next morning.
- Apply the trained coefficients to 14 unseen days, compare the model's MAE with the seasonal-naive baseline, express it as forecast skill and chart actual vs predicted.
- Run a 12-step walk-forward test: at each step the trend model is refitted on all weeks so far and forecasts the next week. Then you compare it with a model frozen after week 8.
- Fit the full model with TREND, refit it three times with one feature dropped, compare test MAEs and chart how much each feature really helps.
About this course
Many practical forecasts are just regressions on the past, if you prepare the data correctly. This course shows how to turn a time series into a supervised learning table and test it honestly. You create lag and rolling-mean features, add weekday dummies and a holiday flag and split training and test data by date so no future information leaks in. Naive and seasonal naive baselines set the bar, measured with MAE, RMSE and MAPE. You fit a linear regression on lags with LINEST, predict the test period and compare errors in a chart. Walk-forward validation with an expanding window gives a realistic accuracy estimate, and drop-one importance shows which features earn their place. Includes graded labs and a certificate.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
