What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Scale two customer features of Copperleaf Coffee with min-max and z-score, using statistics from the training rows only.
  • Fit a line through ten weeks of ad spend and new subscribers by hand with the normal equations, and use it to predict next week.
  • Train the same kind of line with gradient descent: four steps from w = 0, b = 0, watching the cost (MSE) fall.
  • Score twelve subscribers with a trained logistic regression: churn probability, predicted class and the log-loss that tells you how good the probabilities are.
  • Judge the churn model on 20 test customers: confusion matrix, accuracy, precision, recall and F1, and what happens when you lower the threshold.
  • Classify a new Copperleaf subscriber by finding the three most similar existing customers and letting them vote.
  • Run one full k-means iteration on twelve customers: distances to three centroids, cluster assignment, new centroids and the inertia.
  • Do what a decision tree does at its first node: measure the Gini impurity of two candidate splits and pick the better one.

About this course

Machine learning libraries hide the arithmetic, which makes it hard to know what a model is really doing. This course reverses that: every algorithm is built cell by cell so each step is visible. You split data into training and test sets and scale features, then fit linear regression with the normal equations and confirm it with SLOPE. Gradient descent is run by hand, and logistic regression produces sigmoid scores and log-loss. You evaluate a classifier with a confusion matrix, precision, recall and F1, classify points with a k-nearest-neighbours vote and run one k-means iteration manually. The last lab finds the best decision-tree split using Gini impurity. Ideal for beginners, analysts and anyone who prefers understanding to memorising.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
