Feature Engineering for Machine Learning: Encoding, Scaling, Binning & Leakage
Prepare a loan-default dataset the way ML teams do: missing-value flags and group imputation, one-hot, count and ordinal encoding, min-max, z-score and robust scaling, quantile bins, log transforms and winsorising, ratio and interaction features, smoothed target encoding without leakage, and a correlation + AUC feature screen, in 8 graded labs.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Find every missing income (blanks and a text placeholder), add a missing-indicator feature, and fill the gaps with the median and with the mean of the applicant's employment group.
- Turn employment type into one-hot dummy columns, add a count (frequency) encoding, map the credit grade A–E to an ordinal rank, and avoid the dummy-variable trap.
- Fit three scalers on the training rows, apply them to every applicant including the test rows, and measure how one 210,000 income squeezes min-max scaling.
- Cut years-in-job into fixed bands with an approximate LOOKUP, cut income into quartile buckets, compute the default rate per band and chart it.
- Take the natural log of a right-skewed income, compare the skewness before and after, and cap extreme incomes at the 5th and 95th percentiles.
- Build two ratio features and one interaction feature from the raw columns and show with CORREL that the ratios track default far better than the raw loan amount.
- Encode loan purpose by its default rate three ways: naive on all rows (leaky), on the training rows only, and smoothed towards the prior, and you see why only the last one is safe for unseen and rare categories.
- Screen five engineered features against default with CORREL and a pairwise AUC, turn the AUC into a direction-free strength and chart the ranking.
About this course
Models are only as good as the features you feed them. This course teaches the practical data-preparation steps behind most successful machine learning projects, using a lending dataset. You handle missing values with flags and mean, median or group imputation, encode categories with one-hot, count and ordinal methods and scale numbers with min-max, z-score and robust scaling. Binning creates tenure bands and income quartiles with default rates, while log transforms and winsorising tame outliers. You create ratio and interaction features such as loan-to-income and debt-to-income, apply smoothed target encoding and see exactly how leakage creeps in across a train/test split. Finally you screen features by correlation and univariate AUC. For data analysts and aspiring data scientists.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
