Decision Trees & Ensembles by Hand: Entropy, Information Gain, Random Forests & Boosting

Build a credit-default tree cell by cell: entropy and Gini, information gain with COUNTIFS, the best numeric cut-point, a two-level tree as nested IF, overfitting and pruning, a random-forest vote with out-of-bag rows, gradient boosting with residuals, and feature importance, in 8 graded labs.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Count the defaults in Kestrel Lending's 20 past loans and measure how mixed the group is with entropy (in bits) and Gini impurity, the two scores every decision tree uses.
  • Score three candidate first questions for the tree (employment, income, debt-to-income) by their information gain and let a formula pick the winner.
  • Let the data choose the DTI threshold: for six candidate cut-points you count both sides, compute the weighted Gini, and pick the cut-point with the purest split.
  • Grow Kestrel's first real tree: DTI at the root, income on the left, employment on the right. You fill the four leaves, turn the tree into one nested IF and measure its training accuracy.
  • Score trees of depth 1 to 5 on held-out test loans, chart training against test accuracy, and choose the depth with cost-complexity pruning.
  • Combine five trees into a random forest: count the votes, turn them into a probability and a prediction, show that the forest beats every single tree, and count the out-of-bag rows of a bootstrap sample.
  • Run three rounds of gradient boosting for a regression target: start from the mean, fit a one-split stump to the residuals, add it with a learning rate, and watch the error fall.
  • Compute how much each split reduced the Gini impurity, add the decreases up per feature with SUMIF, normalise them to importances and chart the ranking.

About this course

Tree-based models win many machine learning competitions, but their inner workings are often treated as a black box. This course opens it up. You measure node impurity with entropy and Gini, score candidate splits by information gain and search every cut-point for the best numeric threshold. You grow a two-level tree and express its predictions as nested rules, then compare train and test accuracy by depth to see overfitting and pruning. Ensemble labs build bagged trees and a random forest with majority votes and out-of-bag rows, and you carry out gradient boosting by hand with residuals, stumps and a learning rate. The final lab derives feature importance. For data science students and ML practitioners.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
