What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Score six help-centre queries with precision@k and recall@k, with k kept in one cell so you can change the cut-off, average them over the queries and calculate the hit rate a RAG pipeline cares about.
- Find the rank of the first relevant result for eight queries with MATCH, turn it into a reciprocal rank, average it to the MRR and repeat it with a cut-off (MRR@k).
- Score one ranked result list with graded relevance: discounted gain per rank with LOG(rank + 1, 2), the ideal ranking with LARGE, then DCG@k, IDCG@k and NDCG@k with k in a cell.
- Calculate the precision at every relevant rank for four queries, turn it into average precision (AP), average it to the MAP and see two queries with the same precision@10 but very different AP.
- Sweep the decision threshold of Fern's escalation classifier from 1.0 to 0.0, count true and false positives with COUNTIFS, turn them into TPR and FPR, draw the ROC curve and calculate the AUC with the trapezoid rule.
- Check whether Fern's stated confidence can be trusted: accuracy per confidence bin, the gap to the confidence, the expected and maximum calibration error, and whether the model is over- or underconfident overall.
- Test whether an LLM judge can replace a human grader: a 3 × 3 agreement table with COUNTIFS, the observed agreement, the agreement expected by chance and Cohen's kappa.
- Compare a candidate model with the current one on 240 judged prompts: win rate per category with ties counted half, the pooled win rate, a 95% confidence interval for the decisive win rate and a ship decision, plus a 100% stacked bar chart.
About this course
How do you prove that a new search model or language model is actually better? This course gives you the metrics and makes you calculate each one. For retrieval you compute precision and recall at k and hit rate, then mean reciprocal rank to see how soon the first good answer appears. NDCG handles graded relevance against the ideal ranking, and average precision with MAP rewards good ordering. Classification labs sweep thresholds to draw a ROC curve and approximate AUC with trapezoids, then test calibration by confidence bin. Finally you check how often an LLM judge agrees with people using kappa and compare two models by win rate with a confidence interval. For ML engineers, data scientists and search teams.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
