Data Labeling for AI: Inter-Annotator Agreement, Label Quality & Labeling Cost
Measure and budget the labels behind an AI model in a live grid: class balance and weights, percent agreement vs Cohen's kappa, Fleiss' kappa, majority vote and confidence, gold-item accuracy, label-noise effects, labelling cost per item and active learning savings, every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Calculate the share of each label, the imbalance ratio, balanced class weights and the accuracy a model would get by always predicting the biggest class.
- Calculate percent agreement, chance agreement and Cohen's kappa for two annotator pairs with the same percent agreement, and see why kappa tells them apart.
- Calculate the agreement on each ticket, the share of each category, the chance agreement and Fleiss' kappa for four annotators.
- Aggregate three annotators' labels by majority vote, count the votes for the winning label, flag the tickets below a confidence threshold and measure the unanimous share.
- Score four annotators on hidden gold items, flag those below the minimum accuracy, total the items to re-check and estimate the wrong labels in the week's output.
- Simulate how symmetric label noise in a test set lowers the measured accuracy of two models and shrinks the gap between them, correct an observed accuracy, and plot both curves.
- Turn items and throughput into annotator and reviewer hours, cost each workflow, calculate the cost per item and the share of the budget spent on review.
- Compare two learning curves, find the first round where each reaches the target accuracy with MINIFS, price the labels saved by active learning and plot both curves.
About this course
A model can only be as good as the labels it learns from, yet label quality is rarely measured. This course teaches you how. You first examine label distribution and derive class weights for an imbalanced dataset. Agreement labs compare raw percent agreement with Cohen's kappa, reveal the trap with rare labels, and extend the idea to many annotators with Fleiss' kappa. You combine votes into a label with a confidence score, score annotators against hidden gold questions and simulate how wrong test labels distort measured accuracy. Final labs estimate labelling hours, review overhead and cost per item, and compare active learning with random sampling on labels needed. For ML engineers, data annotation leads and researchers.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
