Computer Vision Metrics: IoU, Precision-Recall & mAP by Hand
Evaluate an object detector cell by cell: box formats and YOLO coordinates, IoU with MAX and MIN, matching predictions to ground truth, precision and recall at thresholds, the PR curve, 11-point and all-point AP, mAP and mAP@[.5:.95], class confusion and Dice vs IoU for masks, every cell checked live.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert five boxes from one frame of Corvid Robotics' warehouse camera from corner format (x1, y1, x2, y2) to width, height, centre and area, and write one coordinate in normalised YOLO format.
- Calculate the overlap of six ground-truth and predicted boxes with MAX and MIN, clamp non-overlapping boxes to zero, and turn intersection and union into the IoU.
- Match 12 person detections on four frames to the 10 labelled persons, greedily by confidence: TP if IoU ≥ 0.5 and the ground truth is still free, otherwise FP; then count the missed persons (FN), precision and recall.
- Keep only the detections above seven confidence thresholds and calculate TP, precision, recall and F1 at each, to see the trade-off a deployment threshold makes.
- Walk down the ranked detections, accumulate TP and FP, calculate precision and recall after every box and draw the precision-recall curve as a scatter chart.
- Smooth the zig-zag PR curve into interpolated precision with MAX and MAXIFS and calculate the average precision of the person class twice: all-point (area) and 11-point (Pascal VOC 2007 style).
- Average the AP of person, forklift and pallet into mAP at every IoU threshold, compute the COCO-style mAP@[.5:.95], compare it with an instance-weighted average and chart how AP falls as the IoU threshold gets stricter.
- Read a class confusion matrix of matched detections, measure the pallet-forklift mix-up, and compare IoU and Dice on the pixel counts of five segmentation masks.
About this course
Object detection results are usually summarised as a single mAP number, but few people can explain how it is produced. This course rebuilds the metric from the boxes up. You convert bounding boxes between corner, centre and normalised formats and compute intersection over union with MAX and MIN. Predictions are matched to ground truth to count true positives, false positives and misses at an IoU of 0.5, and precision and recall are calculated at different confidence thresholds. You plot the precision-recall curve point by point, compare 11-point and all-point average precision and average across classes and IoU thresholds for mAP. The final lab covers class confusion and compares Dice with IoU for segmentation. For ML engineers and computer vision students.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
