Image Processing by Hand: Pixels, Convolution Kernels, Edges & Pooling

Treat images as numeric grids: greyscale from RGB, brightness, contrast and FREQUENCY histograms, thresholds and masks, 3×3 convolution with SUMPRODUCT, sharpening and Sobel edges, padding and stride, max and average pooling, and a tiny CNN from conv to probability, 8 graded labs with colour-scale heatmaps.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • For ten colour pixels from a PixelForge test photo you calculate the perceived grey value with luma weights, compare it with a plain average, find the brightest pixel and work out how much memory a colour photo needs.
  • Brighten and stretch a dim 8×8 photo of a lamp with clipping to 0–255, compare the mean brightness, count the original pixels per brightness bin with FREQUENCY and draw the histogram.
  • Pick a global threshold for a photo of a coin on a dark table, turn the image into a 0/1 mask, measure how much of the image the coin covers and colour the mask.
  • Slide a 3×3 Gaussian kernel over an 8×8 image with SUMPRODUCT, produce the 6×6 blurred output, compare it with a box blur and visualise the result with a colour scale.
  • Sharpen one pixel with a sharpening kernel, then run the Sobel kernels over an image with a bright block to find vertical and horizontal edges and combine them into the gradient magnitude.
  • For six convolution layers you calculate the output size and the number of activations, then compute a stride-2 convolution on a 5×5 image with OFFSET.
  • Downsample an 8×8 feature map (a diagonal-edge detector's output) with 2×2 max pooling and average pooling, compute global average pooling and measure how much data pooling removes.
  • Push a 6×6 handwritten "1" through a complete mini CNN: a vertical-line kernel with bias, ReLU, 2×2 max pooling and a dense layer with a sigmoid, and read the network's probability that the image shows a 1.

About this course

Convolutional neural networks start with simple arithmetic on pixel grids, and here you do that arithmetic yourself. You convert RGB values to greyscale with weighted luminance, adjust brightness and contrast and build a histogram, then threshold an image into a binary mask. A 3×3 Gaussian blur is computed with SUMPRODUCT, and sharpening and Sobel kernels detect edges and gradient magnitude. You apply the output-size formula for padding and stride and run a stride-2 convolution, shrink feature maps with max and average pooling, and finally chain convolution, ReLU, pooling and a score into a tiny CNN. For students of computer vision and machine learning, developers and curious learners who want to see inside the layers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
