Traffic Count Analysis: Hourly Volumes, Peak-Hour Factors, Directional Splits, Vehicle Classes, Annual Averages & Growth Projections

Turn raw road counts into planning numbers. You will build hourly profiles from 15-minute counts, find the peak hour and its peak-hour factor, split traffic by direction and vehicle class, expand short counts to annual averages with fictional factors, read junction turning counts and project growth, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn sixteen 15-minute counts into rolling and clock-hour volumes, find the busiest 60 minutes of the morning and the time it starts, and see why the peak hour is not always a clock hour.
  • Calculate the peak-hour volume, the peak 15-minute flow rate and the peak-hour factor for six sites, then sort them into fictional interpretation bands to see where traffic arrives in a rush.
  • Add a classified count up by direction, calculate the directional split and the heavy-vehicle share of each direction and write the peak-hour split as a planner's 66/34 label.
  • Label two weeks of daily counts as weekday or weekend, average each day type and each day of the week with WEEKDAY inside SUMPRODUCT, and chart the fortnight to see the weekly rhythm.
  • Look up a fictional month factor and day-of-week factor for six one-day counts, expand each count to an annual average daily traffic estimate rounded to 10 vehicles, and do the same for a full 7-day count.
  • Read a four-arm junction's turning count as a from-to matrix, add up the vehicles entering and leaving every arm, find the busiest arm and the share of vehicles that turn instead of going straight on.
  • Project a site's AADT with compound growth to five horizon years, turn it into a design-hour and a peak-direction volume with fictional shares, and find the first year a fictional review threshold is passed with LOG.
  • Check a raw 24-hour count before anyone uses it: count the missing hours, flag suspicious spikes with a neighbour rule, find the evening peak hour with gaps in the data and chart the daily profile of both directions.

About this course

A traffic counter produces thousands of rows; a planner needs a few reliable numbers. This course gets you from one to the other with fictional count data. You roll 15-minute counts into rolling and clock hours, locate the peak hour and measure how peaky it is with the peak-hour factor. You split flows by direction and vehicle class, compare weekdays with weekends, and expand a short count to an annual average daily traffic estimate using invented month and day factors. A junction lab builds the turning-movement matrix and arm totals. You then project compound growth to a design hour and find the year a threshold is reached, and finish with quality checks, spike flags and a daily profile chart. For transport planners, engineering students and data analysts.
