Air Quality Data Analysis: AQI, PM2.5 Averages & Exceedances
Convert ppb to µg/m³, build valid 24-hour means from hourly data, calculate US AQI sub-indices by interpolation, count exceedance days against the WHO 2021 guidelines, chart the daily NO2 cycle, compare weekdays with weekends and build an emissions inventory: 8 graded labs on synthetic station data.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert gas readings from ppb to µg/m³ at 25 °C and at the European 20 °C reference, and turn WHO guideline values back into ppb.
- Turn four days of hourly PM2.5 readings with gaps into daily statistics: valid hours, data completeness, the 24-hour mean and a Valid/Incomplete flag.
- Convert ten daily PM2.5 means into US AQI values: truncate the concentration, find its breakpoint row with MATCH, read the category and interpolate the index linearly.
- Combine four pollutant sub-indices into the daily AQI of a summer week at Harbor Road, name the main pollutant, look up the category and highlight the unhealthy days.
- Compare a year of daily PM2.5 means at both Riverton stations with the WHO 2021 24-hour guideline: exceedance days per station, joint exceedances, exceedances in Q1 and the 99th percentile.
- Extract the hour from two weeks of hourly roadside NO2 readings, average every hour of the day, find the peak hour and chart the daily cycle.
- Label eight weeks of daily roadside NO2 means as weekday or weekend, compare the two means, express the weekend reduction in percent and count the exceedance days of each day type.
- Build Riverton's annual NOx and PM2.5 inventory from activity data and emission factors, find the share of wood heating in PM2.5 and test a stove-replacement scenario.
About this course
Raw readings from an air monitor say little until they are converted, averaged and compared. This course takes you through each step with real-style data. You convert between ppb and micrograms per cubic metre using molar mass and reference temperature, then build 24-hour means while applying a 75% data-completeness rule. Next you calculate an AQI sub-index by truncating, finding breakpoints and interpolating, and derive the overall index with its main pollutant and category. You count exceedance days against a health-based guideline and a 99th percentile, chart nitrogen dioxide by hour of day, compare weekdays with weekends to reveal the traffic signature, and estimate emissions from activity data and emission factors. For environmental students, analysts and municipal staff.
