What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn raw counts for six towns into incidence rates, prevalence and crude death rates, pool them correctly for the district and estimate how long people live with the condition.
- Calculate age-specific death rates for a young and an old town, standardise both to one standard population with SUMPRODUCT and see the crude comparison flip.
- Read a cohort study as a 2×2 table and calculate the risk in each group, the relative risk, the risk difference and the odds ratio.
- Evaluate a screening test from its 2×2 table and show how the predictive value of a positive result collapses when the disease is rare.
- Turn the results of a randomised trial into event rates, absolute and relative risk reduction, the number needed to treat and the number needed to harm.
- Put a 95% confidence interval around a survey proportion and around the relative risk from Lab 3, using the log method.
- Chart an outbreak as an epidemic curve, measure its daily growth rate from 7-day averages, and derive the doubling time and a rough reproduction number.
- Build a period life table from age-specific probabilities of dying: survivors, person-years, years still to live and life expectancy at birth and at 60.
About this course
Exam questions in epidemiology and real public health reports use the same small set of measures, and here you calculate every one. You express cases per 100,000 and separate incidence from prevalence, then age-standardise rates so populations with different age structures can be compared. From 2×2 tables you derive risk, relative risk, risk difference and odds ratio. Screening data give sensitivity, specificity and predictive values, and trial results give the number needed to treat or harm. Confidence intervals are built for a proportion and for a relative risk. Finally you analyse an epidemic curve with growth rate and doubling time, and compute life expectancy from a small life table. For medical, nursing and public health students; all data are teaching examples.
