Epidemic Modeling: SIR Models, R0 & Herd Immunity in Excel

Growth rates and doubling times, R0 from the generation interval, an SIR model with daily Euler steps, peak and final size, herd immunity and vaccination coverage, interventions, the SEIR extension and a first model fit: build the classic epidemic models in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell. Synthetic data, educational only, not public-health guidance.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Log-transform two weeks of case counts, fit the exponential growth rate with SLOPE, and turn it into a doubling time and a projection.
  • Convert doubling times into growth rates and estimate R0 for four towns under three assumptions about the generation interval, and see how much the assumption matters.
  • Write the three formulas that drive a 150-day SIR model for Lakeport (new infections, next day's S and I) and chart the S, I and R curves.
  • Read the key numbers off a finished SIR model: the peak number of infectious people, the peak day, the final attack rate, and the share still susceptible at the peak.
  • Calculate the herd immunity threshold of six diseases, the vaccination coverage needed with an imperfect vaccine, and the effective R at today's coverage.
  • Model a contact-reduction measure that lowers β from a start day, run the SIR model with it and measure how much it lowers and delays the peak.
  • Extend the SIR model with an Exposed compartment for the latent period, write the E and I steps, and measure how much the latent period delays the peak.
  • Compute the early-phase model curve for five candidate transmission rates, score each against three weeks of observed cases with the sum of squared errors, pick the best β and chart the fit.

About this course

Epidemic curves on the news come from models you can build in an afternoon. From daily case counts you estimate the growth rate and doubling time with a log-linear fit, then convert growth into a basic reproduction number using generation-interval approximations. The SIR model is stepped forward day by day, showing susceptible, infected and recovered people, and you read off peak timing, peak size and final size. You compute the herd immunity threshold and the vaccination coverage needed, lower the transmission rate to see the curve flatten, add a latent period to get SEIR, and fit the model to data by comparing squared errors for several transmission rates. For students in public health, maths and biology; a teaching model, not a forecast.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
