Health Economics: QALYs, ICER & Cost-Effectiveness
QALYs, discounting, ICERs and dominance, the cost-effectiveness plane, net monetary benefit, a Markov cohort model, tornado sensitivity analysis and budget impact: build a health-technology assessment of a fictional therapy step by step in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn years in three heart-failure health states into QALYs for standard care and the new therapy NT-7, calculate the QALYs gained, and compute first-year QALYs from trial utility measurements with the area-under-the-curve (trapezoid) method.
- Discount six years of NT-7 costs and QALYs to present values with year 1 undiscounted, and see why NPV alone gets the timing wrong.
- Calculate the incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of NT-7, spot a dominated strategy, run the incremental analysis step by step and choose the strategy to adopt at a willingness-to-pay threshold.
- Place six programmes of the authority on the cost-effectiveness plane, label each quadrant with a nested IF, calculate the ICERs that make sense and draw the plane as a scatter chart.
- Calculate the net monetary benefit of four strategies at four willingness-to-pay values with one mixed-reference formula, pick the best strategy at each λ with INDEX/MATCH and compute an incremental NMB.
- Run a cohort of 1,000 standard-care patients through a Well–Sick–Dead Markov model for five yearly cycles, step by step with plain formulas, and add up the QALYs of the cohort.
- Calculate the base-case ICER of NT-7 from five parameters, vary the QALY gain between its low and high value, find the most influential parameter and draw a tornado diagram.
- Estimate the five-year budget impact of funding NT-7 for the authority: eligible patients, uptake, drug cost, hospital savings, net impact per year and in total, and the cost per member per month.
About this course
Health technology assessment asks whether a treatment gives enough health for its cost. This course takes you through the calculations behind that answer. You compute QALYs from utility and time in each health state and discount costs and outcomes. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios are calculated with checks for dominance, and results are placed on the cost-effectiveness plane. Net monetary benefit is evaluated at several willingness-to-pay thresholds. A three-state Markov cohort model runs cycle by cycle, a one-way sensitivity analysis feeds a tornado diagram, and a budget impact analysis multiplies population, uptake and cost. For health economics and public health students, pharmacy and HTA staff, and analysts in market access. All inputs are teaching examples.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
