Clinical Trial Statistics: Sample Size, Randomisation & Survival Curves

Plan and analyse a fictional heart-failure trial: sample size and power, block randomisation, the baseline table, the primary endpoint with CI and p-value, NNT, a Kaplan-Meier curve by hand and interim boundaries, in a live spreadsheet that checks every cell. Educational, not medical advice.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Calculate how many patients the fictional TL-HF01 trial needs per arm for a binary and for a continuous endpoint, and inflate the total for dropout.
  • Turn the sample-size formula around: what power does the trial have with only 500 patients per arm? Then you build and chart the power curve.
  • Allocate 24 participants in blocks of 4 from frozen random numbers, then compare the balance with simple coin-flip randomisation and calculate how likely such an imbalance is.
  • Build "Table 1" of a trial report from patient rows: mean and SD of age and % female per arm, and a standardised difference to judge balance.
  • Analyse the trial's primary endpoint: the difference in 12-month hospitalisation rates with a 95% confidence interval and a two-sided p-value from the two-proportion z-test.
  • Translate the trial result into the absolute risk reduction and the number needed to treat, give the NNT a confidence limit, and weigh it against the number needed to harm.
  • Build a Kaplan-Meier table for 20 patients (at risk, events, censoring, conditional and cumulative survival), read off the median, and draw the step-shaped survival curve.
  • Run the planned interim look at half the data against a given O'Brien-Fleming boundary, convert the boundary into a nominal α, and adjust four secondary endpoints with Bonferroni.

About this course

Clinical studies follow a strict statistical plan, and this course lets you practise each part of it on fictional data. You calculate sample size for comparing two proportions and two means, then draw a power curve for a given sample. Block randomisation allocates patients and checks balance, and a baseline table summarises the arms. You analyse the primary endpoint with a difference in proportions, confidence interval and p-value, and derive the number needed to treat and to harm. A Kaplan-Meier table is built by hand with a step chart, and the final lab handles interim analyses with O'Brien-Fleming boundaries and Bonferroni. For biostatistics and health science students, trial coordinators and medical writers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
