Sample Size & Power Analysis: How Many Observations Do You Need?
Plan studies, surveys and experiments in Excel: margin of error and sample size for means and proportions, the finite population correction, Cohen's d and the MDE, two-group sample sizes with NORM.S.INV, power curves, power and MDE for a fixed n, and Bonferroni, unequal allocation, dropout and non-response, in 8 graded labs.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- For a checkout wait-time study you find the z value, the margin of error of a planned sample, the t-based margin of error of a small pilot, and the sample size for five target margins.
- For a member survey of a 2,400-member gym you size the sample for a share, shrink it with the finite population correction, check the margin achieved by the responses received and see how little the population size matters.
- From a 12 + 12 pilot you compute the pooled standard deviation, Cohen's d and its size label, and turn the smallest difference worth detecting into an effect size for the power calculation.
- Size the full onboarding study: z values for α and power, n per group for a 1.5-minute difference, the small-sample correction, and a table of n for standard effect sizes.
- For a checkout redesign you derive the target conversion rate, compare the unpooled and the pooled sample-size formula and build a table that shows how the needed traffic explodes for small lifts.
- Compute the power of the two-group comparison for ten sample sizes and two effect sizes, find the first n that reaches 80% and draw the power curves.
- The budget fixes the sample. You calculate the standard error, the power for the difference the client hopes for, the MDE the study can detect with 80% power, and the relative MDE of a conversion test.
- A study compares three new membership offers with a control. You adjust α for three comparisons, size the arms with a larger control group and inflate the sample for dropout and invitation non-response.
About this course
Too few observations and a real effect goes unnoticed; too many and you waste time and budget. This course helps you find the right number. You size samples for a mean from a margin of error and for a proportion with the finite population correction. Effect size is expressed as Cohen's d and as a minimum detectable effect, and you calculate sample sizes for comparing two means and two proportions, including an A/B test. A power curve plots power against sample size, and a fixed-budget lab works backwards to the detectable effect. Finally you adjust for multiple comparisons, unequal allocation, dropout and non-response. For researchers, students and product analysts.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
