Electrician Math: Ohm's Law, Load Calculations, Voltage Drop & Conduit Fill

Ohm's law and the power wheel, series and parallel circuits, single- and three-phase power with √3 and power factor, a dwelling load calculation with demand factors, conductor sizing with temperature and bundling factors, voltage drop with a 3 % size pick, conduit and box fill, and motor overload and breaker sizing with a chart: 8 graded labs for apprentices and license-exam practice. Illustrative tables, not affiliated with NFPA or any code body; your local code applies.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn the nameplate watts of six plug-in loads into amps and ohms, work out current and power of four 240 V heating elements and check whether the whole circuit stays under an illustrative 80 % continuous-load limit.
  • Solve a 24 V series string of three lamps (total resistance, current, voltage drop on each lamp) and a 120 V circuit with four parallel loads (branch currents, total current and equivalent resistance).
  • Calculate kVA and kW for six single- and three-phase loads with the √3 factor and the power factor, find the overall power factor of the building and the line current of a new 15 kW three-phase motor.
  • Build the general lighting and receptacle load of a 2,400 ft² house, apply illustrative demand tiers, add the fixed appliances and pick the smallest standard service size that covers the calculated current.
  • Look up an ambient temperature factor and a bundling factor for six circuits, work out the ampacity each conductor needs before derating and pick the smallest copper size from an illustrative ampacity table.
  • Look up the circular mils of six runs, calculate their voltage drop in volts and percent with the single- and three-phase formulas, and size the long barn feeder so it stays within an illustrative 3 % limit.
  • Add up the cross-section of 14 conductors, find the smallest conduit that keeps them within an illustrative 40 % fill, and check whether a device box is big enough for its conductors, ground, device and clamps.
  • Calculate the full-load current of six three-phase motors from hp, voltage, efficiency and power factor, set the overloads and the breaker limit with illustrative multipliers, pick standard breaker sizes and chart current against breaker size.

About this course

Apprentices and working electricians need the same handful of calculations on every job; this course drills them with immediate feedback. You use the power wheel to move between volts, amps, ohms and watts, analyse series and parallel circuits, and handle single- and three-phase power with the square root of three, power factor, kVA and kW. A dwelling load calculation applies VA per square foot and demand factors to size a service. Conductors are sized from ampacity with temperature and bundling corrections, voltage drop is computed with the circular-mil formula to stay within 3 %, and conduit and box fill are checked. The last lab covers motor full-load current, overload and breaker sizing. Always verify against your local electrical code.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
