What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Treat six help-centre articles of Fernwick Outdoor, a fictional outdoor-gear shop, as tiny 5-dimensional embeddings: you measure each vector's length, normalise it to length 1 and compare the L1 norm.
  • Score the six help articles against a customer question with the dot product and with cosine similarity, and see why a long article wins on dot product but not on cosine.
  • Rank ten help articles by cosine similarity to a customer question, pull out the top 3 scores and titles like a vector database does, and count how many pass a similarity cut-off.
  • Measure the straight-line distance between each article and the query, rank by it, and see why a short FAQ that points exactly the right way is cosine's #1 but only Euclidean's #3, until you normalise.
  • Split Fernwick Outdoor's help centre into overlapping chunks: tokens per article, chunks per article with ROUNDUP, the tokens you actually send to the embedding model and the one-off cost.
  • Compare an approximate nearest-neighbour (ANN) index with exact search for six test queries, compute recall@5 per query and on average, then pick the fastest index setting that reaches a 95% recall target.
  • Combine a keyword score and a vector score for eight articles: min-max normalise the keyword score, blend both with a weight α, rank the results and return the winner.
  • Evaluate the retriever of a help-centre assistant on 12 test questions with a known gold chunk: reciprocal ranks, MRR and hit rate at k = 1, 3, 5 and 10 for vector-only vs hybrid retrieval, then chart the hit-rate curves.

About this course

Vector databases sound complicated, but the core is arithmetic you can do in a grid. You treat embeddings as plain vectors, compute their length and normalise them, then compare dot product with cosine similarity. A top-k lab ranks documents for a query and returns the best matches, and a side-by-side test shows when Euclidean distance and cosine produce different orders. You estimate tokens per chunk, number of chunks and embedding cost for a document set, measure how approximate search trades recall@k for speed, and blend keyword and vector scores into a hybrid ranking. The course ends by evaluating retrieval for a question-answering system with hit rate@k, mean reciprocal rank and a chart. For developers, analysts and product managers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
