Biogas Plant Economics: Feedstock Mix, Gas Yields, Methane Content, Electricity & Heat Output, Digestate, Feed-In Revenue and Payback

Run the numbers on a farm or community biogas plant. You will plan a feedstock mix with fictional gas yields, compute biogas and methane volumes, turn them into electricity and heat with a combined heat and power unit, value the heat and digestate, compare fictional feed-in tariffs with upgrading to biomethane, and test payback and sensitivity, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Turn a year's feedstock plan into dry matter and organic dry matter tonnes, find each feedstock's share of the organic matter and the dry matter of the whole mix: the starting point of every biogas calculation.
  • Look up a fictional biogas yield and methane share for each feedstock, turn the organic dry matter into cubic metres of biogas and methane, and express the methane as kWh of energy and as the methane share of the mixed gas.
  • Turn four feedstock scenarios into a daily input, the retention time in the digester and the organic loading rate, and label each scenario against the fictional design range of the plant.
  • Turn a year's methane into fuel energy, compare three fictional combined heat and power units on electricity and heat output, and check how many full-load hours each would run.
  • Price the plant's three products: electricity sold under a fictional feed-in tariff after own consumption, heat sold after warming the digesters, and digestate that is partly sold and partly costs money to get rid of.
  • Cost a year of operation: feedstock purchases including a gate fee the plant receives, haulage per tonne-kilometre, CHP and other maintenance, staff and fixed fees, and express the total per MWh of electricity.
  • Build 15 years of net cash flows including the start-up year and a CHP overhaul, and judge the investment with simple payback, the cumulative payback year, net present value and internal rate of return.
  • Compare upgrading the gas to biomethane with burning it in the CHP, measure how strongly five inputs move the plant's annual result, find the biggest driver and draw a tornado-style chart.

About this course

Before a farm or community commits to a digester, the numbers have to work from the first tonne of manure to the last kilowatt-hour sold. This course walks through those numbers with fictional values. You plan a feedstock mix by fresh mass, dry matter and organic dry matter, then estimate biogas per tonne, methane share and energy content. Retention time and organic loading tell you whether the digester volume copes. CHP output in electricity and heat follows from full-load hours, and revenues come from a fictional feed-in tariff, heat sales and digestate. Operating costs and investment cash flows lead to payback, NPV and IRR, and a biomethane option plus a sensitivity table show which input matters most. For farmers, energy planners and students. Illustrative – not investment advice.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
