What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Convert six hydrogen deliveries from kilograms into kilowatt-hours on the lower and the higher heating value and into normal cubic metres, and you work out how many kilograms a customer's energy order needs.
  • Compare three fictional electrolyser offers: output per hour and per day from rated power and specific consumption, the efficiency on the LHV basis and the water each one needs per day.
  • Let the electrolyser run only in hours when power is at or below a price threshold, count the running hours, work out the hydrogen made on that day and the average power price actually paid.
  • Multiply step efficiencies into a round-trip efficiency for the hydrogen route and for a battery, and you work out how much electricity each route needs to deliver 1,000 kWh back.
  • Estimate the gas density at storage pressure with the ideal-gas law and a given correction factor, the usable hydrogen per storage bundle, the number of bundles for three days of output and the days of storage they really give.
  • Turn the investment into a yearly annuity with PMT, add fixed O&M, electricity and other variable costs, divide by the yearly output to get the cost per kg, and fill a sensitivity table of power price against full-load hours.
  • Use reaction equations and molar masses to work out the hydrogen needed per tonne of ammonia, methanol and e-methane, correct it for a process yield, convert a year of hydrogen into product tonnes and add up the CO2 the methanol route needs.
  • Compare four fictional power-supply scenarios: emissions per kg of hydrogen, CO2 avoided against a fossil benchmark, the cost of each tonne avoided, and a chart of the LCOH by scenario.

About this course

Hydrogen projects are judged on a few hard figures: kilograms produced, energy lost along the way and cost per kilogram. This course lets you derive each one from first principles. You convert between kilograms, kilowatt-hours and normal cubic metres, then size an electrolyser by specific consumption, daily output, efficiency and water demand. You test running only when power is cheap, trace efficiency from electricity to hydrogen and back and compare it with a battery. Storage labs turn gas density into usable mass and days of supply. You build a levelised cost model with a capex annuity, maintenance, power price and a sensitivity table, convert hydrogen into ammonia, methanol and e-methane, and finish with emissions per kilogram and abatement cost. For engineers, energy students and project developers.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
