Electric Vehicle Range & Energy: kWh/100 km, Charging Time & Trip Planning

Calculate electric-vehicle energy from first principles in 8 hands-on labs: usable battery and consumption units, range scenarios, rolling resistance and air drag at speed, cold-weather effects, tapering charging curves, home vs fast-charging cost, a road-trip plan with charging stops, and wall-to-wheel losses with CO2 per km.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Work out the usable battery energy of four illustrative EVs and convert their consumption between kWh/100 km, Wh/km, km/kWh and mi/kWh.
  • Turn six driving scenarios into full range, a practical trip range between 90 % and 10 % charge, the change against mixed driving, and a bar chart that compares them.
  • Calculate the power needed against rolling resistance and air drag at six steady speeds, turn it into kWh/100 km and chart how consumption climbs with speed.
  • Apply illustrative temperature penalties to consumption and available energy, calculate the range from −10 °C to 40 °C, compare it with 20 °C and interpolate the range for a 5 °C forecast.
  • Model a fast-charging session band by band: cap the car's power at the charger's rating, calculate energy and minutes per band, add them up and find the true average power from 10 % to 80 %.
  • Include charging losses in the price per kWh, compare four charging options per 100 km and per year, and calculate the blended cost of a realistic charging mix.
  • Plan a four-leg road trip: arrival state of charge after each leg, the charging time to the planned level, driving time and the total trip time including stop overheads.
  • Chain four efficiency stages into a wall-to-wheel efficiency, convert wheel energy into energy from the wall, calculate CO2 per km on four grids and find the grid intensity at which the EV matches a petrol car.

About this course

Rated range and real range are rarely the same; here you calculate why. You convert between kWh per 100 km, Wh per km and miles per kWh, and chart full, practical and relative range at different consumption levels. A physics lab separates rolling resistance from air drag to show how speed drives energy use, and a temperature lab estimates cold-weather consumption and usable energy. Charging time is modelled with a power curve that tapers as the battery fills, and costs are compared for home, public and fast charging per 100 km and per year. You then plan a road trip with legs, arrival charge, stops and total time, and finish with wall-to-wheel losses and CO2 per km by grid intensity. For EV owners, buyers and students.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
