What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Build the one-product profit model of Lumen & Co., a desk-lamp maker, so that every result is driven by the input block – the base for every what-if tool in this course.
  • Keep three scenarios side by side, pick one by name and let a Live column feed the model – a live version of Excel's Scenario Manager.
  • Test nine prices for the desk lamp in one table – units react to the price – and chart EBIT against price to see where profit peaks.
  • Build a 5 × 5 grid of EBIT for units (down) and price (across) with one formula, count the combinations that reach the target and colour the losses red.
  • Find the units that hit a target EBIT of $250,000 twice: with a 16-step bisection table (what Goal Seek does) and with one line of algebra.
  • Answer four Goal Seek questions with exact formulas: break-even revenue, units for an after-tax profit target, the price that hits it, and the margin of safety.
  • Flex each of the four drivers by ±10%, measure the swing in EBIT, name the most important driver and draw the tornado chart, largest bar first.
  • Turn 20 given random numbers into 20 possible years for the desk lamp, then report the expected EBIT and the probability of a loss.

About this course

A good model answers what happens if prices fall, costs rise or volume misses the plan. This course teaches you to build models that answer such questions instantly. You separate inputs from calculations, switch between base, best and worst cases with CHOOSE and INDEX, and build one- and two-variable data tables with formulas and mixed references. Goal seek is recreated with a bisection table and compared with the algebraic solution, and break-even and target profit are solved directly. A tornado chart shows which driver moves profit most, and a scenario simulation in the Monte Carlo style estimates expected value and the chance of a loss. For analysts, business students, founders and managers who build or review forecasts.
