Collecting by the Numbers: Catalogue Values, Condition Grades, Set Completion, Auction Results with Fees, Insurance Values & a Collection Index

Manage a collection of coins, stamps, cards or models like a curator. You will build a catalogue with condition grades and value multipliers, track set completion and duplicates, compare catalogue values with fictional auction results after fees, set insurance values, follow the collection's value with a simple index and plan a budget for missing pieces, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Summarise a collection catalogue by series: items listed, pieces held, items whose condition is still to check, and the oldest year in a series.
  • Look up a grade multiplier for each item, turn the price-list value into a value per item and per holding, and total the value of the graded collection.
  • Mark every design of a set as owned or missing, measure how complete the set is, count the gaps and name the first missing design with a formula.
  • Count the spare copies Mira can swap, value them, value what Jonas offers in return and work out the balance of the swap.
  • Turn hammer prices into what the buyer pays and what Mira receives after fictional fees, compare her net with the list value per lot and for all lots pooled.
  • Turn graded values into replacement values, flag items above a fictional single-item limit, total the insured value and calculate the annual premium with a minimum.
  • Measure the yearly change of the collection's value with and without new purchases, build a base-100 index and work out the average yearly growth.
  • Count the missing designs per series, price the cost to complete each set, work out how many months a monthly budget needs for all of them and chart owned vs needed designs.

About this course

A collection becomes much easier to manage once each item has a clear record and a reasoned value. This course shows you how to build that record. You set up a catalogue with IDs, series, years and conditions and add completeness checks. A fictional grading scale with multipliers turns list values into values per item. You track set completion and the missing list, identify duplicates and balance a fair swap. Auction results are converted into net amounts after buyer's premium and seller's commission and compared with list values. Insurance values with single-item limits, a base-100 collection index and a budget to complete each set close the course. Every lab checks your cells. Illustrative – not valuation or investment advice.
