Model Railway & Scale Modelling Math: Scale Conversions, Scale Speed, Gradients & Helixes, Curve Radii, Track Plans and Fast-Clock Timetables
Plan a model layout that looks and runs right: convert real sizes to common model scales, work out scale speeds, gradients and the climb of a helix, check curve radii against train lengths, count track pieces and costs for a plan and write a fast-clock timetable, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Convert five real objects into model millimetres for four scale ratios, turn a model measurement back into real metres, work out the scale of an unknown model and round a model track gauge to one decimal.
- Turn six stopwatch runs into model speed and scale km/h, work out how many seconds the 200 cm straight should take at the branch-line limit and count the throttle steps that are too fast.
- Calculate the gradient of five ramps, check them against the club's fictional maximum, work out the height a planned ramp gains and the run needed so one track can cross over another.
- Compare five helix radii: track length per turn, gradient for the fixed rise per turn, the whole number of turns needed to reach the staging yard and the smallest radius that meets the fictional guideline.
- Look up the fictional guideline radius for each planned curve, label the curves that are too tight, calculate how far the middle of a long coach moves inward on a curve and count the curves that need a redesign.
- Calculate the arc length of a curve piece, collect the quantities per piece type from the segment list with SUMIF, and total the track length and the cost of the whole piece list.
- Work out the layout time at the end of a 90-minute session on a 4:1 fast clock, calculate arrival times, convert departures into real minutes after the start and write a departure-board line with TEXT.
- Add up the fictional current of all accessories, compare it with the usable part of a fictional supply rating, work out each category's share of the layout budget and show the cost plan in a chart.
About this course
A layout that looks good on paper can still stall on a gradient or derail on a curve. This course helps you check the numbers before you build. You convert real dimensions to model sizes across scales from 1:220 to 1:45, and turn centimetres per second into scale km/h. Gradient labs calculate rise over run and the length needed for one track to cross another, and helix labs find track per turn, gradient per turn and the number of turns. You compare curve radii with guideline minimums and estimate coach overhang. A track-plan lab counts pieces by type, total length and cost. You then run a fast clock and build a departure board, and finish with an accessory current budget and layout cost chart. For railway modellers and scale hobbyists.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
