How Neural Networks Learn: Gradient Descent, Momentum, RMSProp, Adam, Learning-Rate Schedules & Warm-Up by Hand

Watch optimisers work step by step on small loss functions: plain gradient descent, momentum, adaptive step sizes, bias correction, learning-rate schedules with warm-up and weight decay, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Measure how wrong the Kestrel toy model is with a squared loss, find the slope of that loss with a formula and with finite differences, and read from the sign which way the weight has to move.
  • Run ten steps of gradient descent on Kestrel's loss, then compare five learning rates and flag the one that makes training blow up.
  • Give Kestrel's two weights a velocity, take the first momentum steps by hand and see the steep direction overshoot while the shallow direction speeds up.
  • Keep a running average of squared gradients for two weights, one with big and one with tiny gradients, and see that RMSProp gives both a step of similar size.
  • Run five Adam steps on a logged gradient sequence: the two running averages, the bias correction with POWER(β, t) and the final step size.
  • See how batch size controls gradient noise, build eight noisy mini-batch gradients from a fixed random column and smooth them with a running average.
  • Build three learning-rate schedules for a 1,000-step run – step decay, cosine and warm-up plus cosine – and apply one update with decoupled weight decay.
  • Compare four optimisers on the same stretched bowl: the loss after N steps, the first step below a target loss, the leader after N steps and a chart of all four loss curves.

About this course

Training a neural network comes down to one repeated question: which way is downhill, and how big a step should you take? In this course you answer it by hand. You compute losses and gradients for small functions, run plain gradient descent with step tables and watch large learning rates diverge. Momentum adds a velocity term that speeds progress on a stretched bowl but can overshoot. RMSProp scales each weight's step by a running average of squared gradients, and Adam combines both ideas with bias correction. You add mini-batch noise to see the effect of batch size, apply step, cosine and warm-up schedules with weight decay, and race all optimisers to a target loss. Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
