Industrial Automation Math: Analog Signal Scaling, Live-Zero Inputs, Tank Levels, Totalisers, Conveyor Speeds & Alarm Limits with Hysteresis

Do the calculations a controls technician does every day: scale raw input counts and current signals to engineering units, detect wire breaks, scale outputs backwards, convert pressure to tank level and volume, add up flow into totals, set conveyor speeds and build alarm limits with deadbands, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Scale raw input counts to engineering units with the two-point formula, express a reading as a share of its span, scale backwards from a temperature to counts and work out the resolution of a signal.
  • Turn 4–20 mA readings into percent and engineering units, classify each loop as OK, under range, over range, wire break or sensor fault with IFS, and count the healthy loops.
  • Clamp requested outputs to the allowed limits with MIN and MAX, scale them to 4–20 mA and to output-card counts, and build a clamped 0–10 V speed reference for a pump drive.
  • Turn a pressure reading into a liquid level with density and g, add the transmitter offset, calculate the volume of a vertical tank with PI and read a horizontal tank's volume from its table by interpolation.
  • Turn logged flow rates into volumes per interval, total them by shift with SUMIFS, handle a pulse counter that wraps around with MOD and work out the average flow of a shift.
  • Rebuild an on-delay timer from a scan log with MAXIFS, count rising edges with SUMPRODUCT, flag pumps for service with IFS and work out how many days are left until each service.
  • Calculate belt speeds from motor rpm, gear ratio and pulley diameter, work out the motor speed for a target belt speed, turn encoder pulses into distance and estimate a conveyor's throughput.
  • Build a high alarm that only clears after the value falls through a deadband, smooth a noisy signal with a moving average and a first-order lag filter, and count how often an alarm without deadband would chatter.

About this course

A transmitter sends 12.4 mA; the operator wants to see litres, metres or bar. This course teaches the conversions in between, with fictional plant values. You scale raw counts to engineering units and back, then handle live-zero current inputs with percentages, out-of-range limits and wire-break detection. Output labs go the other way, from setpoints to mA, card counts and volts with clamping. You turn pressure into tank level and volume using density, cylinder geometry and a strapping table, build flow totalisers with shift totals and counter rollover, and log run-hours with service flags. Conveyor labs link belt speed, motor rpm and encoder pulses, and the final lab sets alarm limits with hysteresis and smooths noisy signals. For automation technicians, electricians and apprentices.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
