Machine Design by Hand: Stress Transformation & Mohr's Circle, Combined Shaft Loads, Von Mises, Fatigue & the Goodman Line, Shaft Sizing, Bearing Life, Gear Forces, Springs & Bolt Preload
Size the parts that make machines turn. You will rotate stresses and draw Mohr's circle, combine bending and torsion in a shaft, compare von Mises stress with a fictional yield strength, check fatigue with modifying factors and the Goodman line, pick the smallest shaft from a diameter grid, rate rolling bearings by life, follow torque through a gear pair, size a helical spring and turn tightening torque into bolt preload, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Turn four fictional plane stress states into the centre and radius of Mohr's circle, the principal stresses and the maximum shear, find the principal angle with ATAN and a quadrant correction, and chart how the stresses on a face change as one state is turned.
- Calculate the bending and torsion stress at the surface of a solid shaft for four diameters, combine them into the von Mises stress, and compare it with a fictional yield strength to get the yield factor of each size.
- Correct a fictional endurance limit with surface, size and reliability factors from lookup tables, split four load cycles into mean and alternating stress, calculate their Goodman factors and draw the Goodman line.
- Check a fictional list of standard shaft sizes for fatigue and yield, solve both requirements for the minimum diameter in closed form and pick the smallest standard size that meets both with MINIFS – without any solver.
- Look up e and Y from a fictional factor table, turn a radial and an axial load into the equivalent bearing load, calculate the L10 life in hours for five catalogue bearings, and pick the smallest bearing that reaches the target life.
- Turn motor power and speed into torque, follow speed and torque through a two-stage gear train with losses, and calculate the tangential and radial tooth forces of the first gear pair from its pitch diameter and pressure angle.
- Calculate the rate, index and corrected shear stress of three fictional helical springs, turn a tightening torque into bolt preload and find the external load at which the bolted joint would separate.
- Complete a drive-train table with the life factor of one bearing, find the weakest element with MIN and INDEX/MATCH, choose the cheapest upgrade that brings it up to its target and chart achieved against required factors.
About this course
Shafts, bearings, gears, springs and bolts each fail in their own way, and a drive is only as strong as its weakest part. This advanced course checks a fictional conveyor drive element by element. You rotate plane stress states and read principal values and maximum shear from a circle diagram, then combine bending and twisting at a shaft surface into one equivalent stress. An endurance limit is corrected by lookup factors and tested against fluctuating loads, and both strength requirements are solved for the smallest standard diameter. Bearing loads become service hours, two gear stages pass on speed, torque and tooth forces, springs and screws get their stiffness and clamping force, and a summary table finds the cheapest upgrade.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
