Finite Elements by Hand: Spring and Bar Elements, Stiffness Tables, Assembly, Boundary Conditions, Solving by Elimination, Truss Elements, Mesh Refinement & Result Checks

Open the black box behind simulation software. You will write element stiffness values for springs and bars, assemble them into a global table by node numbers, apply supports and loads, solve the system by Cramer's rule and Gaussian elimination step by step, recover stresses and reactions, build truss elements with direction cosines, refine a mesh until the answer converges and check every result for equilibrium, with every cell checked as you go.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Describe a chain of three springs as elements and nodes, write out the four stiffness entries of every element, and turn measured node displacements into elongations, spring forces and the force one element puts on a node.
  • List every element entry with its row node and column node, assemble the global 4 × 4 stiffness table of a spring network with SUMIFS, and check it for symmetry and zero row sums.
  • Remove the clamped nodes of a three-spring chain, solve the reduced 2 × 2 system for the two free displacements with Cramer's rule written out, and recover the support reactions.
  • Turn a stepped bar into three bar elements with k = E·A/L, solve the 3 × 3 reduced system by forward elimination and back substitution in step columns, and recover the stress in each element.
  • Turn the self-weight of a hanging rod into equivalent nodal forces and a temperature rise in a clamped bar into an initial-strain load, then find the displacements and the thermal stress.
  • Rotate two bar elements into the x–y plane with c = cos θ and s = sin θ, assemble the 2 × 2 table of one free joint, solve its displacements with Cramer's rule and check the member forces against a statics hand result.
  • Model a tapered bar with 1, 2, 4 and 8 constant-area elements, add up the element elongations to the tip displacement, compare each mesh with the exact formula and chart how the error shrinks.
  • Review a colleague's hand model of a bar between two walls: recompute the displacement, test the reported reactions for equilibrium, measure the sensitivity to a 10 % smaller area and compare the stresses with a fictional allowable value.

About this course

Structural simulation software produces colourful results, but the method underneath is simple enough to follow step by step. This advanced course opens it up with springs and bars. You describe a chain of springs as elements and nodes, write out each small element table and assemble a global table from node pairs, checking it for symmetry. Clamped nodes are removed and the remaining unknowns solved with determinants and by forward elimination with back substitution. Reactions, strains and stresses follow, self-weight and a temperature rise become nodal forces, and inclined bars are rotated into a plane frame. A tapered bar is meshed ever more finely, and a final review tests a colleague's model.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
