Differential Equations in Spreadsheets: Euler, Heun & Runge–Kutta Methods

Slope fields, Euler's method against exact solutions, step size and the order of a method, Heun, RK4 by hand, predator–prey systems, the damped spring as a second-order ODE and stiffness with backward Euler: 8 hands-on labs that solve ODEs cell by cell.

What you'll build

What you will be able to do

Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.

  • Compute a slope field for dy/dt = a·t − b·y and test whether a candidate function really solves the equation.
  • Solve Newton's law of cooling with Euler steps of 2 minutes, compute the exact solution next to it and measure the error.
  • Run Euler for a growing culture with six step sizes, measure the error and read off the order of the method.
  • Solve the cooling coffee again with 3-minute steps, now with Heun's predictor–corrector method, and compare its error with Euler's.
  • Write one classical RK4 step for logistic growth in a pond, let the table repeat it for 20 months and compare with the exact solution.
  • Step two coupled equations for hares and lynxes forward with Euler's method and chart the cycles of both populations.
  • Rewrite m·x″ + c·x′ + k·x = 0 as two first-order equations, step a damped spring with Euler's method and chart it against the exact solution.
  • Find the step sizes for which Euler is stable on a stiff equation, compute the critical step and solve the problem with the backward (implicit) Euler method instead.

About this course

Watch a differential equation turn into numbers you can follow row by row. You begin by reading a slope field, then let a cup of coffee cool with Euler's method and compare every step against the exact solution. Halving the step size shows how the error shrinks and what the order of a method means. Heun's predictor-corrector and the classical fourth-order Runge-Kutta method follow, each laid out with its intermediate slopes in separate columns. You then solve a predator-prey system, rewrite a spring-mass-damper as two first-order equations, and finish by seeing Euler become unstable on a stiff problem. Suited to engineering and science students, numerical methods courses and anyone who wants to understand what an ODE solver does before relying on one.

Questions about this course

Is this a subscription?

No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.

What exactly do I get?

All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.

When can I start?

Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.

Do I need Excel or other software?

No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.

Is the certificate an official qualification?

No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
