What you'll build
What you will be able to do
Each lab ends with a concrete result that you build yourself and the checker confirms, cell by cell.
- Bracket Brannock Works' break-even volume, halve the interval 14 times, compare the actual error with the guaranteed bound and predict the number of steps in advance.
- Solve for the monthly rate of an equipment lease with Newton's method, using a central-difference slope, and watch it reach Excel's RATE in a handful of steps.
- Find a bond's yield to maturity with the secant method from two rough guesses, guard against division by zero and check the result against Excel's RATE.
- Resolve a revolver's interest circularity by iteration, then rewrite one break-even equation two ways and see one rearrangement converge and the other run off to the other root.
- Compare the four root-finders on one break-even equation: log₁₀ errors, iterations to tolerance and a chart that shows linear vs quadratic convergence at a glance.
- Build a project's NPV profile, run Newton's method on the NPV with its exact derivative and land on the same IRR that Excel's IRR function returns.
- Value a ramping, continuously discounted cash stream with the trapezoid rule for six step sizes, derive Simpson's rule with Richardson's trick and measure both methods' order of accuracy.
- Apply absolute, relative and residual stopping rules to the same iteration, see that they stop at different steps, and calculate the floor that floating point puts under any tolerance.
About this course
Many finance and engineering problems have no neat formula, only an equation to solve numerically. This course builds the main root-finding methods as step tables so you can watch them converge. You apply bisection with error bounds to a break-even problem, use Newton-Raphson with a numerical derivative to find the rate inside a lease and solve a bond yield with the secant method. Fixed-point iteration shows when circular calculations converge or diverge. You compare convergence speeds across methods, compute IRR as the root of NPV and check it against the built-in function. Numerical integration with the trapezoid and Simpson rules reveals the observed order of error, and the last lab covers stopping criteria and floating-point limits. Includes graded labs.

Questions about this course
Is this a subscription?
No. You pay $9.99 once for this course. There is no subscription and nothing renews automatically. Prices are in US dollars; taxes may be added where required.
What exactly do I get?
All lessons and labs of this course, the final exam and the certificate, including later updates to the course, for as long as Tutorvo offers it. Access is personal and tied to your account.
Can I get a refund?
Yes. If you are not satisfied, email hello@tutorvo.com within 14 days of buying and we refund the course in full via Stripe. The guarantee does not apply once a certificate for the course has been issued to you, or where there are signs of abuse.
When can I start?
Right after payment. Access starts immediately at your request; for consumers in the EU/EEA the statutory right of withdrawal therefore ends once access has begun, while our 14-day money-back guarantee applies regardless.
Do I need Excel or other software?
No. The labs run in a spreadsheet inside your browser on a laptop, tablet or phone. Function names and syntax follow Excel.
Is the certificate an official qualification?
No. It confirms that you completed all lessons of the course and passed its final exam. It is not an official, state-recognised or professional qualification. The name is taken from your profile when the certificate is issued.
